Dr. Glenn Kolansky treats a wide range of dermatological conditions, including skin cancers and acne. At his offices in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, Dr. Glenn Kolansky offers hair loss treatment, laser hair removal, tattoo removal, fillers, and chemical peels. Here, he offers a brief overview of treatment options for people living with acne. Your skin cells continually replace themselves, working their way from the inner layers of your skin toward the outside.
As the cells reach the outer layers, they flatten, forming a protective layer to keep out viruses and bacteria. Within the skin, glands produce oil to lubricate the skin. When these glands are blocked, either by dirt or dead skin cells, bacteria can build up, causing acne. Acne can affect almost anyone regardless of age, but it is most common among teenagers and young adults. Mild acne can be treated with gentle cleansing, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid.
These treatments are easy to complete at home and should be the first line of defense against mild cases of the skin condition. However, sometimes these treatments are not enough to eliminate the acne. A visit to a dermatologist can help you treat your acne. A dermatologist treats moderate or severe acne by draining large pimples or cysts; prescribing antibiotic creams, lotions, or gels; or prescribing retinoids. Some doctors also recommend oral antibiotics, azelaic acid, or topical retinoids such as Differin gel, Atralin, RetinA, or Tazorac.
Treating acne takes time and patience. Many treatments can take as long as six to eight weeks to take effect, and they occasionally cause the symptoms to become worse before they get better. Careful treatment by a dermatologist is the best way to deal with moderate or severe acne.
